What the Grand Egyptian Museum Covers
The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) is at El Remayah Square along the Cairo–Alexandria Desert Road, near the Pyramids of Giza. The museum describes itself as the world’s largest museum dedicated to a single civilisation, making it a substantial stop for anyone building an ancient-history itinerary around Cairo.
A standard admission visit includes access to the Tutankhamun Galleries, Main Galleries, Grand Hall, Grand Stairs, Khufu’s Boats Museum, the commercial area and exterior gardens. That range gives you several different spaces to account for when planning the day, rather than a single gallery visit.

Collections and Visitor Highlights
The Tutankhamun Galleries are among the areas included with standard admission, alongside the Main Galleries. The Grand Hall and Grand Stairs are also part of the visit, as is the Khufu’s Boats Museum. The ticket includes access to the exterior gardens and commercial area too.
If you want a guided introduction, GEM says its standard guided tour lasts approximately two hours and covers the Tutankhamun Galleries, Grand Hall, Grand Stairs and Main Galleries. You can use that as a planning reference, then allow additional time if you want to see other included areas at your own pace.

Where the Museum Is and How to Reach It
GEM is near the Giza Pyramids, at El Remayah Square on the Cairo–Alexandria Desert Road. The museum says you can reach it by car, tour bus or public transport.
If you are driving via the 26th of July corridor, the museum directs drivers to take the Cairo–Alexandria Desert Road exit toward Remaya Square and enter through Gate 2. For a broader look at transport and visit planning around the pyramids, see how to visit the Giza Pyramids from Cairo.
The Giza Pyramids are 15 km from Santana Hotel Cairo, making a museum-and-pyramids outing a realistic pairing in the same area.
Tickets, Opening Times and Entry Information
- Ticket
- purchasing website
Admission prices vary by selected experience, visitor nationality and age category. The official ticketing page shows current prices and is identified by GEM as its only official ticket-purchasing website; the museum says it is not responsible for tickets bought through other platforms.
GEM says tickets must be booked online in advance with a selected entry time. The booking process asks you to choose a visit date, ticket type and entry time.
That time is the period when you may enter, not a limit on how long you can stay. Tickets are valid only for the specified date and time, are non-transferable and allow single entry; you cannot re-enter after leaving.
The museum complex is listed as open from 8:30 AM to 7:00 PM on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, with galleries open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM on those days.
On Saturday and Wednesday, the complex hours are 8:30 AM to 10:00 PM, and gallery hours are 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM. Last entry is one hour before gallery closing: 5:00 PM on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and 8:00 PM on Saturday and Wednesday.
The GEM Children’s Museum is listed as open Sunday–Thursday from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM, and Friday–Saturday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Free admission is listed for children under six and visitors with disabilities; you need valid identification to verify eligibility. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times inside GEM.
Personal, non-commercial photography and videography are permitted, subject to gallery-specific restrictions. Flash, tripods, monopods, selfie sticks, drones and live streaming are prohibited. Food and drinks are not allowed inside the galleries, except for small water bottles, and outside food and beverages are not permitted on the museum premises.
Large bags, backpacks, luggage or parcels exceeding 40 × 40 cm are not permitted inside; designated cloakroom or storage areas are available. Tickets are non-refundable after purchase, except in cases of force majeure as determined by the museum.
Before you go: Opening hours, ticket conditions and entry rules can change, so check the official site before you go.

Planning a Museum Visit with the Pyramids
The museum’s location near the Pyramids of Giza makes it possible to plan both as part of the same area outing.
Decide which visit matters most to your schedule, then choose an entry time that gives you room to reach the museum and follow its entry rules. Since tickets permit single entry, plan to complete your museum visit before leaving the premises.
If you want to spend time at both places, avoid treating the museum’s two-hour guided tour as the full length of the visit: it covers four named areas, while standard admission also includes the Khufu’s Boats Museum, commercial area and exterior gardens. The nearby pyramids can make up the other part of the day.

Allowing Time for the Visit
Use the approximately two-hour standard guided tour as a baseline for the areas it covers. Add time if your plan includes the other spaces available with admission, or if you want to move through the galleries without following a tour.
The entry slot sets when you may enter, not how long you may remain, so you do not need to treat it as a timed visit duration.
Before choosing your slot, compare it with the gallery closing time and the last-entry cutoff for that day. If you are visiting with children, check the Children’s Museum hours against your selected entry time as well. Keeping those details in view should make it easier to decide whether to focus on GEM or combine it with the nearby pyramids.
