What to See at Cairo Tower

Set on Zamalek Island in the Nile River, Cairo Tower is a central Cairo landmark built between 1956 and 1961. Egyptian architect Naoum Shebib designed the 187-metre tower with reinforced concrete in the shape of a stylized Egyptian lotus flower. Aswan granite stones form its base, giving the structure a contrasting foundation beneath the slender, flower-inspired tower.

The tower has 16 floors, with an open panoramic observation deck at the top. A ride to the top takes about 45 seconds, according to the Egyptian State Information Service. The tower opened to the public in 1961 and was officially inaugurated that year during the presidency of Gamal Abdel Nasser.

Near the summit, a restaurant rotates around a central point, completing one full turn in one hour. It is on the 14th floor, at a height of 160 metres. That makes the restaurant another way to take in the city from above, distinct from the open-air deck.

About 500 Egyptian workers took part in the tower’s construction. Later improvements included a development project inaugurated in 2009, with two new elevators and upgrades to the electricity, fire-safety and water systems. The tower was also renovated in 2006, with restoration work and the addition of external colored lighting.

The View from the Observation Deck

The View from the Observation Deck

The open circular deck gives you a broad look across Cairo and the Nile. Telescopes are available for viewing landmarks, and the Cairo Governorate lists Maspero Building, Saladin Citadel and Abdeen Palace among the sights visible from the deck.

The view extends beyond the city’s central landmarks: the Nile River, the Giza Pyramids and the Sphinx are also listed among the sights visible from Cairo Tower. At 187 metres tall, the tower is about 43 metres higher than the Great Pyramid of Giza, according to the Egyptian State Information Service.

The circular layout gives you a panorama rather than a single fixed outlook. As you look around, the telescopes can help you identify individual landmarks across the broad cityscape. The Nile, historic sites and distant monuments make up different parts of the view from the same deck.

Location and Getting There

Location and Getting There

Cairo Tower is about a 9-minute drive from Santana Hotel Cairo. It stands on Zamalek Island, in the Nile and central Cairo. If you are planning to explore the surrounding area on foot, you can pair the visit with a walk through downtown Cairo.

The tower’s island setting places it amid the Nile and the central city. You can plan the outing around the tower itself, then use the city views from the deck to orient yourself to landmarks such as the river and the Giza Pyramids.

Tickets, Opening Hours and Entry

Ticket prices and opening hours aren’t specified here, so check the official site before you go. Confirm entry details there before setting out, especially if you are planning your visit around a particular time of day.

Choosing a Time to Visit

Choosing a Time to Visit

The Cairo Governorate advises visiting the circular observation deck in the late morning or late afternoon for clearer city views. Those are the recommended windows to keep in mind when planning your trip up the tower.

Build your timing around the view you want to take in: the deck is open to the sky, while the restaurant provides a rotating vantage point near the top. The restaurant completes a full rotation in one hour, so its setting changes gradually as you dine. Check entry information before choosing when to arrive.

Qasr El-Nile Bridge is another central Cairo landmark to consider adding to your plans. The view from the bridge gives you a Nile-side perspective, while Cairo Tower’s elevated deck looks across the river and the city. You can also use a downtown Cairo walking guide to plan time in the surrounding city.

For a museum visit, consult the Egyptian Museum Cairo visitor guide as a separate stop in your itinerary. The tower’s deck, a walk around downtown and a museum visit offer different ways to spend time in Cairo; choose the combination that fits the rest of your plans.
